Welcome to the Cub
Construction Corner! In an effort to keep the Los Angeles City
College community informed, we’re bringing back our construction
newsletter. With so much going on throughout the campus, this new,
monthly newsletter will keep us all on the same page.
Cubs can take pride in the
fact that during his “State of Hollywood” speech last Thursday, City
Council President Eric Garcetti mentioned LACC not once, but TWICE!!
First, when explaining the Hollywood WorkSource Center being a
one-of-a-kind institution located on a community college campus. Our
second mention came when he listed the progress Hollywood has been
making over the past few years, including the largest new building
projects in LACC’s history!
And, yes, there will be trenches!
It is anticipated that we will have approvals for
the central plant and infrastructure improvements by the end of
February. This will include trenching throughout the campus to
replace old storm, sanitary, gas, fire service, water,
communications and power lines from Vermont Avenue through the
breezeway and into the central plant.
These utility grades are vital to the future of
LACC, for both new and old buildings. If you have any concerns or
questions, be sure to attend our “Cubs Under Construction” Town Hall
on February 20th. Presentations will be made at 9 a.m., noon and 2
p.m. in the Faculty Staff Center. See you there!
Visit www.laccdbuildsgreen.org to see electronic
‘fly-through’ presentations of LACCD construction projects. The City
College presentation will be available on the site following its
debut at the February 13th Board of Trustees meeting. Enjoy!

Site Infrastructure Utilities Project – Phase
2 Beginning March
2008, over 2 miles of trenching will replace all utility
lines on campus (sewer, storm drain, electrical, communication, gas,
water). This project will take approximately 2 years to
complete and will significantly impact the pedestrian traffic flow
on campus. But rest assured there will always be a safe
route to travel through campus along with handicapped accessible
entrances to all buildings.
- A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for
February 20, 2008 at 9:00 a.m.,
12 noon and 2 p.m. in the
Faculty & Staff Conference Room to discuss the impact this
project will have on the campus. Representatives will be on
campus throughout the day to answer questions.
Martin Luther King Library Construction for the MLK Library is on schedule and
is expected to be completed in April 2008.
The scheduled move from the existing facility to the new
Library is set for early summer 2008.
- Look out for more news on the ribbon cutting
ceremony for the Library, which is tentatively planned for
September 2008.
New Parking Structure & Athletic Fields
In order to provide more parking, a
new 979-car parking structure with top-deck synthetic track and
field for soccer and softball is well underway. The project is
on schedule to be completed in August 2008.

On December 12, 2007, we
celebrated a groundbreaking for our new $38 million 85,000 sq. ft
Science and Technology building. The three-story structure will
house several departments including Nursing, Dental Technology,
Chemistry, Geology, Life Science, Biology and Microbiology.
- On a greener note, the new facility is
designed to qualify for the US Green Building Council's LEED™
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards.
So, what’s so important about LEED? LEED
certification provides independent, third-party verification
that a building project meets the highest green building and
performance measures. All certified projects receive a LEED
plaque, which is the nationally recognized symbol demonstrating
that a building is environmentally responsible,
profitable and a healthy place to live and work. (Source: US
Green Building Council Web site.) For more information, visit

Stay tuned for more updates on other LACC
projects, including the Child Development Center (CDC), Science and
Technology Building, Franklin Hall Modernization, and the Master
Plan Update.
